Background and release

Recorded in 2015 at a warehouse in Brunswick, Victoria, Ed Service told ABC News that the song was about "solidarity, love and connectedness... all the lyrics are about reaching out for one another, about connecting the community strength."[2]

In February 2018, a set of remixes was released. According to Ant Celestino of Onelove "There had never been anything quite like Love Tonight so we focused on the edgier forefronts: enlisting a little known DJ Seinfeld, and legendary New Jersey underground DJ Mike Simonetti for a remix vinyl, and seeded it to tastemaker DJs. We took that initial support and kept pushing back to more DJs and saw it start to resonate in other scenes: Eastern Europe in 2018, Burning Man in 2019 - it was definitely a slow process! In 2020, we collaborated with SHOUSE on a concept for how it could become an anthem of unity during COVID lockdowns."[3]

In March 2021, German electronic music producer Oliver Huntemann and Brazilian DJ and producer Vintage Culture both released remixed of "Love Tonight" which gained more traction with DJs. This was followed in June 2021 with another remix by French DJ and record producer David Guetta, which saw the song appear on national charts across Europe.[4]

Ed Service explained the phenomenon in conversation to radio host Eddie Perfect on ABC News: "...it was just a big group of amateur singers and some of Melbourne's underground music stars of the time. It's become a release anthem as people come out of lockdown in Europe and it's becoming part of a cultural movement. Thousands of Europeans [are] singing along to all our mates in a warehouse in Brunswick."[2]

Critical reception

"Love Tonight" received a mixed reception upon release.[4]

Fraya Dinesent from Purple Sneakers wrote: "The track initially presents itself as a slow-burning number, setting the scene with a chorale of different vocalists against resounding saxophone hooks. Shouse assembled an all-star choir of people they love and admire in their local scene including Oscar Key Sung, Monte Morgan (Client Liaison), Bec Rigby (the Harpoons), Habits, Pillow Pro and a whole bunch more, ultimately delivering a crew that champions unity. After setting the scene, 'Love Tonight' drops into a more familiar style of track driven by crisp percussion and resilient bass lines, overladen with stellar chorus lines and more tasty sax motifs."[5]

Commercial performance

"Love Tonight" was a worldwide commercial success.[6]
