List of fuel protests

This article provides a list of mass protests in different countries organized in substantial part by substantive increases in fuel prices. These protests typically responded to changes in government law that reduced fuel subsidies. All the protests on this list have their own Wikipedia article, and fuel price increases are mentioned in the lead as a major driver of the protest.

This list is useful for multiple reasons.

  1. An important way to respond to the threat of global warming is to increase the price to consumers of fossil fuels. This can be done by canceling subsidies, where they exist, and increasing fuel taxes.
  2. To avoid protests like in the countries on this list, Canada and Switzerland are using a "carbon fee and dividend" program, whereby they send checks to all citizens so the net impact of the price increases on poor and middle class people should be approximately zero.
  3. This list might help people around the world better understand the constraints their politicians may face (i.e., the potential for protests) and a way around these constraints (i.e., carbon fee and dividend). This in turn may help people concerned about global warming be more effective in their political activities on this issue.
