Early life

Fridman was born in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. Fridman is of Ukrainian-Jewish descent,[6][7] as his father is Jewish and was born in Kyiv[8][9] while his grandmother was born and raised in Kharkov[10] and his grandfather was a machine-gunner in Ukraine against the Nazis during World War II.[11] His father, Alexander Fridman, is a plasma physicist, as well as the John A. Nyheim Chair Professor and Director of the C.J. Nyheim Plasma Institute at Drexel University College of Engineering, holding a PhD from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.[12]

Fridman went to high school in the Chicago suburb of Naperville, Illinois and graduated from Neuqua Valley High School in 2001. After completing high school, Lex Fridman went on to obtain a BS/MS degree in computer science from Drexel University in 2010, and completed his PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the same university in 2014.[13] His PhD thesis, completed under the advisement of engineering educator Moshe Kam, sought to "investigate the problem of active authentication on desktop computers and mobile devices."[14]

Career

Fridman's career began at Google, working on machine learning.[15] Fridman is a research scientist and lecturer[4] at MIT.[16][17] His work at MIT involves research into human-centered artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicle research, deep learning, and personal robotics.[15][18] In 2017, Fridman worked on computer vision, deep learning, and planning algorithms for semi-autonomous vehicles.[19] Fridman's work has been published in peer-reviewed journals.[20]

Lex Fridman Podcast

Started in 2018,[21] the Lex Fridman Podcast (originally titled Artificial Intelligence Podcast)[22][23] discusses "AI, science, technology, history, philosophy and the nature of intelligence, consciousness, love, and power",[24] unlike his previous show which was intended to be "more general and personal".[25] Guests have included Elon Musk,[26][27] Joe Rogan,[28] Jack Dorsey,[29] Ray Dalio,[30] and Mark Zuckerberg.[31] Fridman's third interview[32] with Elon Musk discussed Musk's opinions on space exploration and cryptocurrency.[33][34][35]

Personal life

Fridman has trained in Brazilian jiu jitsu for a number of years, and is a first-degree black belt under sixth degree Relson Gracie black belt Phil Migliarese III of Balance Studios in Philadelphia.[36] He has also competed in several grappling competitions, including a match for Professional Grappling League against submission grappler and ADCC medalist Garry Tonon in 2013.[37]

Fridman also has an interest in music, and plays both the guitar and piano.[38][6][39]
