Lekhpal

A lekhpal is a village or gram panchayat level administrative officer who deals with almost all sort of administrative issues as the SDMs do at tehsil or pargana level in uttar pradesh. Maintaining the land records such as khasra(record of plot), khatauni(record of right),Jinswar (crop production details)etc. Each and every matter, whether it belongs to encroachment of public land, demarcation disputes among two parties or income, caste, domicile, character, solvency…almost everything starts with the written ground report of lekhpal.Lekhpals report is the base of almost all the actions taken by the magistrates and higher authorities. Lekhpal also assist his immediate boss commonly known as kanoongo or revenue inspector in mutation of land of deceased to its legal heir as well as resolving the issues of land demarcation of individual and gram samaj too. He has to do crop cutting experiments in which he has to get an estimate of various crop production in unit areas and also helps in animal census so that government can make a better policy regarding farmers, msp and food safety programmes. Role of lekhpal in elections is also very important. Lekhpal is appointed as the supervisor of BLOs and he has to supervise, guide the BLOs in making the updated voter list, addition and deletion of voters, awareness programs regarding voters. He has to distribute the compensation to farmers affected by flood, drought and hailstones. He informs the tehsil authority about any type of disaster or accidents occurring in his lekhpal halka(designted working area). Beside all this, a lekhpal helps the villagers to get the benefit of schemes launched by central and state government such as Beema yojna, PM Kisan, swamitva yojna and many more. So, I can say that the job of a lekhpal offers one to connect directly to the public and you get a chance to work with all sort of persons. As it is not a desk job, it gives you various dimensions to work upon. This multi dimensional nature of this job and challenges always add something to your personality. People have misconceptions of undertable money and corruption. “Overall, a satisfactory but underrated job with great responsibility and very small pay.”
