During his service in the army, Qualls was responsible for tactical nuclear weapons. After leaving the military due to a knee injury in 1990, Qualls began a successful career in business management and sales.[4]

Qualls lives in Medina, Minnesota and was formerly an executive at Minnesota-based healthcare company Medtronic.[5] He was the Republican candidate for Minnesota's 3rd congressional district in the 2020 election. He lost his first bid for political office to the incumbent congressman, Dean Phillips.[6]
