History

The Green Guard was formed in 1942 in the occupied Kyiv region by the former "Makhnovist" Osip Tsebriy,[1] who illegally escaped France.[2] The partisans fought against the troops of Nazi Germany, as well as the Soviet Union and Ukrainian nationalists.[1] Osip Tsebriy tried to revive the anarchist movement known as the "Green Guard" among the Ukrainian peasants.[1] However, there is no more detailed information about the unit's military operations.[1] It is known that in the winter of 1943 it was crushed by anti-partisan German troops.[1][2] Osip Tsebriy went into hiding with the local peasants for several months, but in the end he was arrested and unrecognized imprisoned in a concentration camp, from where he was freed by the Allies in 1945.[1][2]
