Geoffroy de Vandac

Geoffroy de Vandac was Marshal of the Knights Templar during the mastership of Guillaume de Beaujeu.

Biography

Geoffroy de Vandac was probably from the County of Auvergne,[1] or the Duchy of Burgundy.[2] He was probably related to the Knight Hospitaller Hugues de Vendac and the Templar brothers Roger de Vendac and Odin de Vendac.[1]

The date of his departure for the Holy Land and his entry into the order of the Temple are unknown. He seemed to have been appointed Marshal of the Order before 1289. After Qalawun began the siege of Tripoli in March 1289, he commanded, in his capacity as Marshal, the reinforcements sent by the Templars, while the troops of the Hospitallers were under the orders of their Marshal Matthew of Clermont.[1]

After several battles, the fall of Tripoli finally took place on April 26, 1289, but Geoffroy de Vandac survived, while the temple commander Pierre de Moncade was killed, and managed to flee by sea to join his order.[1]

The date of his death is unknown, but it probably happened after May 1289, perhaps at the beginning of the Siege of Acre in 1291.[1]
