Background

The number "18" in the group's name is an alphanumeric code that corresponds to "AH", the initials of Adolf Hitler - with "A" being the 1st letter of the alphabet and "H" being the 8th.[3]

The group had a reputation for recording countless attacks and brutal murders they carried out on minorities, immigrants, non-Russians, transients and similar victims alike as well as the filiming of humiliating interviews of their political opponents (most of which were anti-fascist militants). The videos were sold and distributed on their website and end up circulating the internet.[4]

Dissolution and legacy

Format18 are often credited with popularizing the trend of filming attacks on immigrants in the Russian Federation, which has become a popular practice amongst Russian neo-Nazi circles.[5][6]

The group has been featured in several documentaries about neo-Nazis in Russia, including From Russia With Hate and Ross Kemp on Gangs.[7][8]
