Political Life

Most people remember that Fernando Botero Zea began his political career as a member of the Bogotá City Council, representing the Liberal Party between 1988 and 1990. He would later become a senator between 1991 and 1993. He was later elected Secretary General of the Liberal Party from 1991 to 1993. Upon leaving this position he was chosen as campaign manager for presidential candidate Ernesto Samper in 1994. When Samper won the elections Botero Zea was appointed Minister of Defense. Although this was not his first time in a presidential cabinet, as he had already served as Vice Minister of the Interior, from 1986 to 1988, with Virgilio Barco as President of the Republic.

The Campaign

Shortly after Samper's presidential victory, Andrés Pastrana, Samper's opponent and future successor, accused Samper of having received campaign donations from the Cali Cartel, in the amount of US 6 million. Colombia's attorney general, Alfonso Valdivieso Sarmiento, personally led the investigation. Valdivieso is a cousin of the late Luis Carlos Galán, a charismatic presidential candidate assassinated in 1989 by the Medellín Cartel for his political views. Galán favored the extradition of drug traffickers to the United States for prosecution.

Valdivieso's investigation revealed connections between the Cali drug cartel and leading figures in Colombian society, including politicians, journalists, athletes, military and police officers, artists, among others. As a result, numerous politicians and high-ranking members of the government were indicted. Botero was arrested in connection with the investigation and charged with conspiracy to illicitly obtain wealth for others. He served 30 months and was released on February 12, 1998. In 2002, Botero was accused by his then arch enemy President Samper of the embezzlement of 800 million pesos from Samper's presidential campaign. The case went to trial. The judge in the case acquitted Botero and declared him innocent. In 2003, the Superior Court of Bogotá confirmed the charges and Botero appealed the decision. In January 2007, the Supreme Court of Justice upheld the Court's verdict [2].

Second trial

In a televised interview for the RCN channel on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, Botero presented evidence of his innocence, denounced the political persecution that would presumably be the cause of the recent adverse rulings by the justice system, and offered hitherto unknown details.

In 2009, due to the accumulation of sentences decreed by the Superior Court of Bogotá in the final instance, Dr. Botero obtained the benefit of freedom and the end of his criminal proceedings. From there, he divides his time between Mexico and Colombia.

Fernando Botero Zea currently resides in Mexico City, as director of Grupo Editorial Estilo México, which publishes the magazine Estilo México, Be!, Espacio Corporativo, and some other publications of brands such as Peyrelongue.
