Epsom and Ewell Harriers
Epsom and Ewell Harriers is an athletics club in based Ewell, Surrey, England. Founded in 1890, members train Ewell Athletics Track at the Harrier Centre, Ewell Court, which has a clubhouse, hall and gym. [1]
History
The club was founded in 1890 and has been based in the Epsom and Ewell area ever since. The club is the oldest in Surrey. The club have occupied the Harrier Centre and Ewell Athletics Track in Poole Road Recreation Ground, Ewell Court since the 1950's, when the site contained a grass track roughly 320 metres long. From 1964, it was a cinder track with a small clubhouse.[2]
In 1995, Ewell Athletics track was upgraded to an all weather synthetic surface at a cost of £250,000. It was resurfaced in the same material in 2011. A new, larger clubhouse was completed in 2000 shortly after the old one was demolished in December 1998.
Training and competitions
The track hosts training nights on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Road running sessions also occur nearby at various times of the week. The club also host various inter-club competitions, including a series of 1 mile races in August. Since 2021, the club have held a 3k relay event every June in Nonsuch Park, Stoneleigh.
Additionally, the club competes in a variety of competitions, primarily the Southern Athletics League (main track and field competition in the Summer) in addition to the Rosenheim League. In the Winter, the club compete in the Surrey Cross Country League in additon to the East Surrey Cross Country League. Club membersip totals around 250.
Notable Athletes
- David Warren (b. 1956) - 800m runner who ran at the Moscow 1980 Olympics and 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games.
- Julia Bennett (b. 1970) High Jumper who won the 1990 UK Championships, as well as competing in the 1994 and 2006 Commonwealth Games. Also holds multiple British age category High Jump records.
- Diana Norman (b. 1974) - Over 40 and 45 Indoor Pentathlon WR holder. Sister of Julia Bennett.
- Rosie Clarke (b. 1991) - Endurance athlete who has attended the 2018 Commonwealth Games and multiple World Championships.
- Ollie Garrod (b. 1993) - Ultra Endurance athlete. Garrod has represented Team GB at the 100 km distance in 2019 and 2022
- Daniel Wolff (b. 1994) - Sprint and middle distance athlete who competed at the Special Olympics in 2015. Great-Grandson of 1936 Olympian Frederick Wolff[3]
