Early life

Renouf was born in Mexico City in 1943,[2] the daughter of Edward Renouf, an artist, and his wife, Catherine Innes (Smith) Renouf. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College (BA 1965) and Columbia University School of the Arts (MFA 1971), where she studied under the abstract expressionist painter Richard Pousette-Dart.[1][3]

Career

Renouf is known for altering the surfaces of canvas or paper before applying paint. She removes fibers from these materials or cuts into their surfaces, next adds pigment, and finally sands down the applied medium to bring the alterations she has made to the forefront.[4] The resulting lines and marks that appear on the final surface call attention to the underlying texture of the surface.[3] While their grid-like composition suggests a formal relationship to the work of her contemporary Agnes Martin, Renouf's work derives from a different technique.[5]

Renouf's first solo art exhibition was held at the Yvon Lambert Gallery in Paris in 1972.[1] Since 1972, she has lived and worked in New York and Paris.[3][6]

Collections

Renouf's works are held in the collections of the Blanton Museum of Art,[7] Art Institute of Chicago,[8] National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the CU Art Museum at the University of Colorado Boulder,[9] and the Walker Art Center.
