With the 2022 acquisition of EVRYTHNG, a software company based in London, Digimarc added a digital product cloud to its roster of products.[4]
History
Digimarc was founded by Geoff Rhoads. In 1996, after initial venture funding, Digimarc released its first product: a digital watermarking plug-in bundled with Adobe Photoshop, Corel and Micrografix software. [5]
In 1997, Bruce Davis was appointed CEO, and the company was awarded its first digital-watermarking patent. The patent is part of Digimarc's portfolio of nearly 1,100 patented innovations today.
When the company went public with an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 1999, it raised more than $90 million.[6] That same year, Digimarc contracted with a consortium of leading central banks to develop a global system used in deterring digital counterfeiting of currency. In 2001, Digimarc acquired a business division of Polaroid Corporation.[7] The company used those assets to establish Digimarc ID Systems®, a division of the company that would eventually enhance driver licenses in 37 states. Digimarc sold Digimarc ID Systems in 2008® for $315 million and turned its attention to targeting new markets such as content protection and media enhancement.
Digimarc was named one of the 25 fastest growing companies by Forbes magazine in 2004.[8] The company received an Emmy Award for Technology & Engineering, honoring the company's work in the entertainment industry in 2015.[9]
In 2017, Digimarc was issued over 100+ new patents including compelling innovations in Digimarc Barcode enhancement and verification, augmented reality and machine learning. That same year, the company opened offices in Cologne, Germany and Tokyo, Japan. [10]
Digimarc entered semi-industrial trials in 2021 as part of the Digital Watermarks Initiative HolyGrail 2.0. an initiative that includes over 100 companies across the supply chain committed to ending plastic waste using technology.
In April 2021, Bruce Davis retired. Davis was succeeded by Riley McCormack who had served as Lead Director of the Digimarc Board.
On November 15, 2021, Digimarc announced its plan to acquire EVRYTHNG, a software company based in London that specializes in product cloud technology, which links every product item to a digital record on the web enabling access to data across the value chain for visibility, validation, real time intelligence, and an interactive consumer engagement connection for users. The acquisition was completed in January 2022.[4]
Platform
Digital Watermarks
Digimarc's digital watermark is a patented design that, when applied to packaging, can contain additional product information, and enable various automated processes and business applications. These uses include anti-counterfeiting, improved recyclability, and supply chain traceability among other applications. The watermark can be applied to all types of products and packaging including boxes, plastic goods, and apparel. [11]
Watermark Detection Software
Digimarc's watermark detection software allows users to scan both traditional barcodes and Digimarc digital watermarks. The software lets users scan barcodes from up to four feet away. When users scan the digital watermark, they can verify the authenticity of the product being scanned. [12]
Verification/Quality Control software
Digimarc's quality control software, Digimarc Verify – Desktop, helps printers and premedia professionals validate the accuracy of the Digimarc digital watermark on packaging and other media. It also provides guidance about its suitability for certain uses such as retail checkout. [13]
Product Cloud
The EVRYTHNG® Product Cloud is a platform that connects consumer products in a cloud using a digital identity, or digital twin. The cloud gathers and organizes product data including raw materials, ingredients, packaging, production, and distribution data; purchase, resell, and recycling information. [14]
