Early life and education
Rathee was born on 8 October 1994[3] in a Hindu Jat family, in Haryana. He considers himself a Hindu atheist (an atheist who is culturally Hindu). He completed his schooling in Haryana, and considers Haryanavi as his native language. He obtained his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, where he also completed his master's specialised in renewable energy.[4][5] Apart from his formal education, he has developed keen interest and knowledge in Political science, Political philosophy and Economics areas.[6]
Career
In 2014, Rathee released a debut video on his channel, titled "BJP Exposed: Lies Behind The Bullshit", targeting Narendra Modi's government that had been elected earlier that year. In 2016, Rathee earned online visibility after he "debunked" YouTuber Ajay Sehrawat's claims of Arvind Kejriwal's "ineffective" administration. Rathee said, "When I saw people sharing Ajay Sehrawat’s videos without checking the facts, I realised the need to present actual research in front of them so that they understand the truth."[7] His political analysis encompasses wide range of national issues, while being highly critical of the Narendra Modi government and the Hindutva politics.[8][9]
Rathee released a series of fact-checking videos on his YouTube channel covering various topics including 2016 Uri attack, 2016 Indian Line of Control strike, 2016 Indian banknote demonetisation and Gurmehar Kaur row. He launched Pee News, a satire "fake news" segment, in which he criticised BJP and Hindutva politics. He started a series called The Dhruv Rathee Show in which he continued to be critical of the central government which is now discountinued.[7] From 2017 to early 2020, he wrote opinion columns for ThePrint.[10]
Over the years Rathee has drifted away from his diatribe-like videos solely regarding the incumbent Central Government of India. Now his videos cover a wider range of topics such as personal finance, environmentalism, geopolitics, history, society, philosophy, video biographies, current affairs and ground reports.[11][12][13] His videos now contain a significant amount of animated graphics.
In July 2020, Rathee started another YouTube channel named Dhruv Rathee Vlogs where he publishes his international travel vlogs hosted by himself along with his longtime girlfriend Juli Lbr, whom he married in the later part of 2021.[14][15] He hosts shows such as DW Travel of Deutsche Welle,[16] Decode with Dhruv of Netflix India;[17] and a Spotify-exclusive podcast called Maha Bharat with Dhruv Rathee.[18]
