History

While earning a masters degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, founder and violist Ion Zanca started a traditional string quartet with musicians he had met on campus.[3] The ensemble began playing private events and building a fanbase of classical music audiences.[4]

In 2007, the group ventured into experimental territory and developed an electric set including covers of rock and pop songs. The first of their covers was The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony." Following the single's success, they released their first full-length album Eclectric in 2010.[5]

In 2011, the quartet expanded its sound by adding guitar and drums, thus becoming a sextet.[6]

Their video hits include "Despacito" (2017), with over two million views on YouTube,[7][8] and Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now."[9]

DSQ collaborates with other artists from the worlds of pop, jazz, and beyond. In 2021 they released their original Latin jazz single and video "Sabor" featuring Colombian jazz pianist Jesús Molina[10][11] and a cover of Billie Eilish's "When the Party's Over" arranged by Ben Bram, the co-creator of Pentatonix.[12]In October 2021, they released a collaboration with contemporary classical group The Piano Guys titled "You Are The Reason." It was included on The Piano Guys' full-length album Chill released in October 2021.[13]
