Civilis (vicarius)
Civilis is all that is known of the name of a vicarius of Roman Britain around AD 368. According to the Res Gestae by Ammianus Marcellinus, he was installed as deputy prefect by Emperor Valentinian I during the Great Conspiracy. General Dulcitius was brought to Britannia to take command of the troops stationed there at the same time under Count Theodosius' reforms.[1]
Under Civilis' rule the last of the earlier invaders were temporarily driven out in AD 369,[2] possibly using troops under his own personal command, and a programme of civil restoration begun. The latter was probably Civilis' main responsibility.
