Deera Square

Deera Square (Arabic: ساحة الديرة) is a public space in ad-Dirah, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in which public executions (usually by beheading) take place. It is known as Al-Safaa Square (Arabic: ساحة الصفاة), Justice Square[1] and derisively called Chop Chop Square by English speaking visitors.[2]

At unannounced times, police and other officials will clear the area to make way for the execution to take place. After the beheading of the condemned, the head is stitched to the body, which is wrapped up and taken away for the final rites. As with public executions in the U.S. and other capital punishment jurisdictions, it is a crime to record, with photos or videos, the executions, despite the number of attendees witnessing such public events.[3]
