Berkeley Human Rights Center
The Human Rights Center (HRC) at the University of California, Berkeley is an academic research center on war crimes and other violations of international humanitarian law and human rights.[1] Founded in 1994, the center received the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions from the MacArthur Foundation for its 20 years of impact in 2015.[2] The center is known internationally for its investigations into potential war crimes in Myanmar.[3][4] As of 2022, the faculty director is Eric Stover.[5]
Mission
The Human Rights Center at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law conducts research on war crimes and other serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights. Using evidence-based methods and innovative technologies, we support efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and to protect vulnerable populations. We also train students and advocates to research, investigate, and document human rights violations and turn this information into effective action. We are guided by the need to listen to and support survivors, test innovative ideas, draw from multiple disciplines, use rigorous methods, and collaborate.
Current Programs
The center currently operates programs on sexual violence, tech and human rights, human trafficking.[6]
