Structure
The Council consists of Bangkok Metropolitan Councillors (Thai: สมาชิกสภากรุงเทพมหานคร; RTGS: Samachik Sapha Krungthep Mahanakhon), who are elected directly by voters in each of Bangkok’s 50 districts. A district may return more than one Councillor, therefore the number of Councillors composing the BMC often fluctuates between elections. The number of Councillors to be elected per district is prescribed by the Election Commission, in accordance with the registered population in each district.
Council elections are regularly scheduled for every 4 years, and are often out of sync with gubernatorial elections. Due to the 2014 Thai coup d’état, the current Bangkok Metropolitan Council is entirely appointed. However, the first Council elections since the coup are to take place on 22 May 2022, on the same day as the first gubernatorial election in 9 years.
The current (12th) Bangkok Metropolitan Council, as appointed by the National Council for Peace and Order on 10 July 2014, consists of 27 independent Councillors, and 3 vacant seats previously held by independent Councillors. The current Chairman of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (Thai: ประธานสภากรุงเทพมหานคร) is Khamron Komolsuphakij, assisted by First Deputy Chairman Kitti Butsayapalakorn and Second Deputy Chairman Konjanat Junnaphat.
