Badr Benoun

Badr Benoun (Arabic: بدر بانون; born on 30 September 1993) is a Moroccan professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Al Ahly[3] and the Morocco national football team. He is nicknamed Sultan[4][5]. He started his professional career playing for Raja CA.

Club career

The beginning of the march

Benoun started his career playing for Raja Casablanca. He didn't play much since he is a youngster, still adopting to the professional life. He won his first trophy with the club after finishing top in the 2012–13 Botola. He was loaned out to Wydad de Fès in order to gain more playing time and more experience of the Botola. He played a total of 16 games before being loaned out again to RS Berkane. In 2015 he was called back to the club.

Raja Casablanca

Benoun's return bought excitement back to the Raja fans. He won his second trophy after defeating Difaâ Hassani El Jadidi in the 2017 Moroccan Throne Cup after scoring a penalty.

2018-2020: Glory years

In 2018, Raja qualified to play the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup. Raja entered the knock-out stages after topping the group stages. Raja reached to the finals and won the cup.[6] This guaranteed them a spot in the 2019 CAF Super Cup.[7] Raja was to face Espérance Sportive de Tunis the was to take place in Doha. Benoun scored a goal in the 64th minute and won the cup. He also won the 2019–20 Botola and the 2019–20 Arab Club Champions Cup.[8] He spent 5 seasons with the club before signing with Al Ahly.[9]

Al Ahly

In November 2020, he joined Egyptian club Al Ahly.[10] He represented the club during the FIFA Club World Cup and secured the bronze medal after a victory against Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras. Soon later he led his team to win the 2020 Egypt Cup, He also won the 2021 CAF Champions League[11] and the 2020 CAF Super Cup.[12] He later went on defeating his mother team Raja[13] and won the 2021 CAF Super Cup.[14]

International career

In 2013, benoun achieved a gold medal in the 2013 Islamic Solidarity Games after defeating Indonesia 2-1 in the final.

On 7 October 2017, he made his international debut for Morocco in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Gabon at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, replacing Medhi Benatia of the 3–0 victory.

In May 2018, he was named in Morocco's 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.[15]

The Moroccan national team was set to face Egypt in a Two-legged tie to qualify for the 2018 African Nations Championship. The first match aginst Egypt took place in 13 August 2017, where it witnessed a Moroccan tie in Egyptian soil scored by benoun himself on the 52nd minute of the game. The second match was on home soil where morocco won a staggering 3-1. Morocco won 4-2 on aggregate and qualified for the 2018 African Nations Championship.[16] Benoun represented Morocco in the 2018 African Nations Championship, helping his country to achieve the first chan title for Morocco.

The Moroccan national team was drawn with Algeria in a Two-legged tie to qualify for the 2020 African Nations Championship. The first match aginst Algeria was played in 21 September 2019, The match ended in a tie. The second match was on home soil where moroccans fans witnessed a 3-0 victory against their rivals. Benoun scored a penalty in the 27th minute. Morocco won 3-0 on aggregate and qualified for the 2020 African Nations Championship.[17][18] Benoun was not capable of playing in the 2020 African Nations Championship due to him signing with the Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC.

On 10 January 2022, Benoun was switched with Achraf Bencharki in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering an injury that would limit his participation in the Competition.[19][20]
