Awf ibn Abd Awf

Awf ibn Abd Awf (Arabic: عوف ابن عبد عوف) was an Arab businessman who specialized in the field of trading. His son Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was one of the wealthiest businessmen of Arabia in the 7th-century.

Life

Awf was born in Mecca and belonged to the Zuhra clan of the Quraysh tribe. His father Abd Awf ibn Abd al-Harith was a grandson of Zuhra ibn Kilab, the progenitor of the clan. Awf married his cousin al-Shifa bint Awf, who also hailed from the Zuhra clan.

Awf worked as a trader and was a close business associate with Affan ibn Abi al-As of the Umayyad clan.[1] Awf and Affan would often bring their sons Abd al-Rahman and Uthman respectively on business journey caravans.[1] While Awf and Affan were on a journey to Yemen, they planned to take the wealth of a deceased member of the Banu Jadhima. Khalid ibn Hisham, another member of the Jadhima, claimed the deceased man's wealth and eventually killed Awf and Fakih ibn al-Mughira of the Umayyad clan with the aide of the Jadhima.[2] Affan and his son Uthman reportedly witnessed the killing of Awf. Khalid and his clan subsequently stole Awf and Fakih's wealth.[2]
