Atakum
Atakum is a central district in Samsun, Turkey. Its population was 120,916 as of 2011.[2] Atakum is a largely middle class suburban district located to the west of the primary city of Samsun and further suburban Ondokuzmayıs. The city's population expanded rapidly beginning in the 1990s and continues to grow at a healthy pace. The city consists largely of middle class housing blocks with ground floor retail and a mix of office uses. In 2009, the city undertook a significant waterfront redevelopment campaign which entailed the construction of a beachfront and pedestrian promenade. Construction of the waterfront promenade and Tram was lead by former Samsun Province governor Yusuf Ziya Yılmaz. The city is served by the Samsun Tram which down the median of İsmet İnönü Caddesi.

Ondokuz Mayıs University is located on the western edge of the city and is serviced by the University Station on the Samsun Tram. Atakum's mayor is Cemil Deveci of the Republican People's Party.
History and Orientation
Atakum became a district within the scope of the draft law envisaging 43 new districts. It starts on the Samsun-Sinop highway, 5 kilometers from Samsun's city center. It covers the distance from Atakent town border. The lands that now encompass the urbanized part of Atakum were used primarily for agricultural purposes. The sea in Atakum is shallow and defined a wide beach adjacent to the Black Sea. Before the Turkish War of Independence the settlement was known by the Greek name Matation. Samsun Province was once home to a large population of Pontic Greeks and Armenians.

Since Samsun is a newly built district, spread over a flat area compared to other residential areas, the town follows an organized street grid layout. Since the 1990s, Atakum's population has increased rapidly. Atakum has been the municipality with the highest population growth rate in Samsun. The population of Atakum is 63,712 compared to 2004. According to the 2010 census, it is 123,904. By 2020, the population had risen to 210,082.[3]

Founded in 1994, a town called Atakum Municipality is located within the adjacent areas of the municipality. Metin Burma served as the first mayor of the newly formed Atakum Municipality. He for the first 2 terms. Between 2004 and 2009, Adem Bektaş was the chairman. In the March 29, 2009 elections, Metin Burma was re-elected president.
As of 2022, Atakum has several bank branches, three shopping malls and various public institutions.
The municipality, which previously served the role as a summer resort of Samsun has now become a fully residential and urbanized region. State road D.010 (Turkey) runs through the center of Atakum connecting it to Samsun City Center, Bafra and Sinop, Turkey. Atakum has been given the status of district, and local government structuring has been made with the surrounding municipalities and towns.
