AssangeDAO
AssangeDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) formed in December 2021[1] to bid on a single non-fungible token (NFT) by digital creator Pak, who said the proceeds would go to the Wau Holland Foundation. Among other things, the Foundation supports imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange,[2][3][4][5] who is awaiting extradition to the United States, where he is charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusion and violations of the Espionage Act of 1917.[6][7][8]
The DAO's initial promoters were Assange's lawyer Jen Robinson, his then fiancée (now wife) Stella Moris, and his half brother Gabriel Shipton. In late 2021, Shipton met with Pak, who was pursuing the theme of censorship in his artwork.[2] Pak created the NFT Clock, which shows a digital clock that increments with each day of Assange's imprisonment.[9]
AssangeDAO won the February 2022 auction of the NFT with a bid of $56 million equivalent of cryptocurrency Ether (ETH), raised from over 10,000 contributors through fundraising platform Juicebox.[9]
