Ashyk Aydyn Pir

Ashyk Aydyn Pir is the patron saint of singers and bards, in Turkmen tradition.[1]

Mausoleum

Aydyn Pir's mausoleum is located in the Daşoguz region of Turkmenistan — it is venerated by thousands of Turkmen, in pursuance of a career in music.[1] Aspiring musicians sleep on its steps, hoping to meet Pir in their dreams.[2][lower-alpha 1]

Notes

  1. The Diyarbekir Fortress lies right north of this site. It was prob. settled around 400 BC, before being abandoned; a resettlement occurred around 10th century but continued only till 15th century. The brick fortress is rectangular in plan, and walled with interspersed semi-circular towers. In some local traditions, Pir had spent a part of his life in the fortress.
