Etymology

Ansvar is the Swedish word for ‘responsibility’.

History

Ansvar Insurance was formed in Sweden in 1932 out of the Temperance Movement. Initially the business focused on personal home and motor insurance, but strong connections with the Church over the years was the catalyst for the development of specialist commercial policies for the not-for-profit sector. Ansvar expanded across the world into over twelve countries including the UK, with an office in London. In 1975 they moved to their current office in Eastbourne. Ansvar has grown to become one of the UK's leading charity insurers.

They specialise in charity and faith insurance covering thousands of risks in the UK, and unlike other insurers, their products are specifically designed for the niches they insure.

Charity work

Historically they have focused their support specifically on charities who educate children and young adults about the effects of drugs and alcohol. From 2022 they widened their remit to encompass charities who promote healthy lifestyles to children and young people.

Ansvar also set up the Eastbourne arm of The Hygiene Bank,[8] in 2019 by setting up a team to co-ordinate a local response to a local need. For this initiative they were named as Pro Bono Company of the Year at the Better Society Awards 2020, an annual event that honours commercial companies whose efforts extend beyond commercial success and make valuable contributions to society; and Corporate Community Local Involvement award at the Charity Times Awards 2021.
