He was deployed in 2022 to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where Ukrainian sources claimed he was killed[2][3][4][5] in an airstrike on an airfield in Chornobaivka.[2][6] This would make him Russia's sixth general to be killed in the invasion and the most highly ranked casualty of the war up to that point.[7][6]
Russian sources have not confirmed his death.[8][9] On 28 March, Russian television broadcast images that allegedly showed Ramzan Kadyrov meeting Mordvichev in Mariupol.[10][11]
