Aloor Shanavas

J. Mohamed Shanavas (born 22 April 1982), known as Aloor Sha Navas, is an Indian politician, writer and social worker from Tamil Nadu.[1][2] He is currently the Deputy Secretary General of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. He is currently serving as a Member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Nagapattinam constituency elected in 2021.[3][4]

Early life and education

Shanavas was born into a middle-class family in Aloor near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District. His parents are Jainul Abideen and Raabiyath Beevi. He is married to Parveen and they have a son.[5] He was attracted towards the rationalist ideals of Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, the founder of the Dravidian movement. While his father and mother raised Muslim, Shanavas identifies as an Atheist.

Politics

Currently he is an MLA for Nagapattinam constituency of tamilnadu state assembly from VCK. And also he is serving as the Deputy General Secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. He is a strong supporter of Periyar, Muhammad Ismail and B.R.Ambedkar.[6] He was the joint candidate of the People's Welfare Front Alliance, the six party alliance in the 15th Tamil Nadu Legislative Elections for the Kunnam constituency. After losing in 2016, he defeated his nearest ADMK rival in 2021 Legislative elections for Tamil Nadu Assembly from the Nagapattinam constituency in an individual 'pot' symbol as a part of the DMK-led alliance.[7][8]

Activism

Shanavas has written six books and directed three documentaries to highlight the issues in the country.[9]

Shanavas received death threats from a BJP worker who said in social media that a news of Shanavas will come soon as a prize for victory of the BJP in 4 seats in the state. The BJP worker was later arrested by the police.[10][11]
