Aggabai Sasubai

Aggabai Sasubai (transl.Oh, my mother-in-law) is an Indian Marathi drama television series directed by Ajay Mayekar, produced by Sunil Bhosale and distributed by Zee Entertainment Enterprises. It was broadcast on the Zee Marathi television channel from Monday to Saturday at 8:30 pm and is now digitally available on the ZEE5 online app. It starred Ashutosh Patki, Nivedita Joshi-Saraf, Girish Oak, Tejashri Pradhan, Mohan Joshi and Ravi Patwardhan in lead roles. It is about Asavari Kulkarni, a middle-aged widow who is urged by her daughter-in-law Shubhra to remarry a hotel owner and chef Abhijeet Raje despite her overpampered son Soham going against her remarriage.

Aggabai Sasubai became much popular and had a sequel Aggabai Sunbai which was aired from 15 March 2021 - 21 August 2021 and starred actors Adwait Dadarkar and Uma Pendharkar for the roles of Soham and Shubhra respectively. The television series also had remakes in some other Indian languages; Manam Pole Mangalyam on Zee Keralam in Malayalam language, Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal on Zee Tamil in Tamil language and Sasse Ni Sasse Tu Khushiyan Ch Wasse on Zee Punjabi in Punjabi language.

Plot

July 2019

Soham Kulkarni (Ashutosh Patki) hurries to go and meet Shubhra (Tejashri Pradhan) at a bus-stop. Meanwhile, his widowed mother Asavari Kulkarni (Nivedita Joshi-Saraf) is busy watching the cookery show of her favourite chef Abhijeet Raje (Girish Oak). Further, Shubhra reaches her house and informs her decision of marrying Soham which irritates his grandfather Aajoba (Ravi Patwardhan). Later, Shubhra bumps into Abhijeet on the road. After that, Soham and Shubhra are married and a stay is organized for them as a marriage gift. Meanwhile, Asavari informs Abhijeet over a phone-call that she liked his Crème Brûlée. Further, a furious Aajoba makes Soham and Shubhra return home. Later, a worried Asavari accidentally phones Abhijeet instead of Soham. The next day, Abhijeet reaches Asavari's house in order to buy the camera sold by Aajoba. Further, Asavari accidentally mixes rice grains in his coffee as she gets baffled due to his arrival. Later, Aajoba returns home and sells the camera to Abhijeet. However, Abhijeet deliberately leaves the camera at Asavari's house for her feelings for it. After that, Aajoba hurries to deposit Abhijeet's cheque in the bank. Further, he refuses to return the cheque despite learning that Abhijeet has not bought the camera. However, Shubhra manages to convince him to return the cheque. Later, Asavari goes to Abhijeet's restaurant to return him the cheque and accompanies him for lunch. After that, Abhijeet sets out to accompany Asavari home who gets no sign of Shubhra. Meanwhile, Aajoba orders food from a restaurant as Soham is unable to heat the food cooked by Asavari. Further, Abhijeet and Asavari drink tea from a stall on the road. Later, Soham and Aajoba berate Asavari when she returns home but Shubhra consoles her.

December 2019

5 months later, Shubhra suggests Asavari to gift Abhijeet the sweater knitted by her. Further Asavari gifts Abhijeet the sweater which delights him. However, Soham sees Abhijeet wearing the sweater and berates Asavari. Later, Shubhra chides Soham for his behaviour during lunch. After that, the special treat arranged by Abhijeet at his restaurant delights Asavari. However, she rushes back home on learning that Soham has met with a scooter accident. Further, Shubhra chides Soham for exaggerating his injuries to Asavari. Later, Abhijeet calls Asavari down the building and proposes marriage to her over there. After that, Shubhra consoles a distressed Asavari who unwillingly breaks all ties with Abhijeet. Asavari then asks Shubhra to speak to Abhijeet. Further, Shubhra consoles a shocked Abhijeet who dislikes the decision taken by Asavari. Later, Asavari feels hurt as Soham and Aajoba berate her over abandoning them. The next day, Soham comes to Abhijeet's restaurant to show him his business proposal. Meanwhile, Asavari expresses her feelings for Abhijeet before Shubhra. Further, Soham is shocked to discover Asavari's photograph in Abhijeet's wallet. Later, a furious Soham destroys Abhijeet's souvenirs kept safely by Asavari at home. After that, plagued by Abhijeet's memories, Asavari accidentally phones him instead of a grocery shop owner. Later, Abhijeet arrives at her house but she departs for the grocery shop without spotting him in the building staircase. However, the two end up coming face-to-face down the building. Further, Soham and Shubhra see Abhijeet expressing his feelings before Asavari and giving her a promise.

Days later, Soham tells something to Aajoba which infuriates the latter. Asavari gets terrified as Aajoba confronts her. Further, Abhijeet's confession of love infuriates the latter who then berates Asavari. However, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Aajoba expresses his feelings before him and others takes an important decision regarding Abhijeet and Asavari's relationship. On the wedding day, Soham creates misunderstandings to hinder the wedding, then Asavari suddenly decides to cancel the wedding. Later, Abhijeet clears the misunderstandings and gets married to Asavari.

Production

Casting

The role of Soham was offered to actor Ashutosh Patki who is the son of the famous music composer Ashok Patki. The role of Asavari was offered to actress Nivedita Joshi-Saraf who is the wife of the famous film actor Ashok Saraf. The role of Abhijeet was offered to actor Girish Oak who has worked in several Marathi television series and drama. The role of Shubhra was offered to actress Tejashri Pradhan who had previously been starred in the Zee Marathi television series of Honar Sun Me Hya Gharchi. The role of Aajoba was offered to actor Ravi Patwardhan who had also worked in several television series and dramas. However, actor Mohan Joshi had replaced his role of Aajoba in the series from January 2021 due to the latter's demise on 5 December 2020.

Filming

Aggabai Sasubai is mainly filmed in Mumbai and Thane. The scenes in Abhijeet's restaurant (Abhi's Kitchen) were filmed in Justice Cafe, Ghodbunder Road. The scenes in Asavari's building were filmed in Sahajivan Society, Thane, Maharashtra. Some of the scenes were also filmed in Hiranandani, Thane. The wedding track of Abhijeet and Asavari was shot in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Abhijeet and Asavari's honeymoon scene was shot in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Sequel

Due to the grand success of Aggabai Sasubai, its sequel titled Aggabai Sunbai was launched on 15 March 2021. Actors Girish Oak, Mohan Joshi and Nivedita Joshi-Saraf have played their respective roles of Abhijeet, Aajoba and Asavari. However, actors Ashutosh Patki and Tejashri Pradhan were replaced by actors Adwait Dadarkar and Uma Pendharkar for the roles of Soham and Shubhra. The series also starred Chinmay Udgirkar in lead role. It had got very less TRPs due to the replacements of the original actors of the roles of Soham and Shubhra. The television series had a sudden cancellation on 21 August 2021.
