2022 Israeli-Palestinian clashes
On 15 April 2022, the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem was stormed by the Israel Police with stun grenades and tear gas,[1] commencing an outbreak of violence between Palestinians (including Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas) and Israeli security forces. The outbreak of violence coincided with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and the Jewish holiday of Passover end stretched into the Christian holiday of Easter.[2] Clashes at the Temple Mount continued over the next week as riot control action was declared to be in effect by Israeli security forces, who engaged Palestinian stone-throwing demonstrators.[3][4] Islamic Jihad retaliated by firing rockets into Israel on April 18;[5] alongside Islamic Jihad, other Palestinian militant groups stated prior that an offensive campaign would occur in the month of Ramadan.[6] Israel launched a retaliatory air campaign, reportedly striking an underground facility allegedly used to produce rocket engines.[7]

On 22 April, Hamas issued four demands to prevent further violence in the region: Israel must allow Muslim worshippers free access to Al-Aqsa, release all Palestinian detainees who were arrested during the clashes on April 15,[8] cease its clearing operations in Jenin (described as "kidnappings" by Hamas), and prevent ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups from conducting Passover sacrifices on the Temple Mount.[9]
Escalation
Prior to the storming of Al-Aqsa, tensions between Israeli Jews and Muslims increased as the result of the 2022 Hadera Shooting and the 2022 Tel Aviv Shooting.[10] Hamas and other groups such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad declared that it would be a "difficult time" for Israel and promised an increase in violence during Ramadan.[6] The Israeli Defense Forces conducted several raids in Jenin, resulting in dozens of arrests and clashes between Israeli Border Police and Shayetet 13 with Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian fighters in the area.[11] During the month of Ramadan, 14 Palestinians (both noncombatant and combatant) were killed by Israeli security forces.[12] Prior to the storming of the complex, a Jewish extremist religious group called Returning to the Mount announced that it intended to perform Passover sacrifices on the Temple Mount during the Jewish holiday of Passover.
Clashes
Jerusalem
Palestinians said that the Israeli officers entered the building just after the Muezzin announced the Adhan, while police said that they had waited until after the prayers ended, as stun grenades and firecrackers used in the clashes went off.[13] Palestinian witnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of security concerns, said a small group of Palestinians threw rocks at police Israeli before.[14] police temporarily blocked the Damascus Gate and restricted other entrances to exclude young men while permitting women, older men and children. Israeli police then left six hours later, with the rest of the day's prayer going uninterrupted.[15] After the initial clashes, violence resumed as Israeli forces reentered Al-Aqsa, conducting a second raid which injured 19 people.[16] Israeli authorities prevented a nationalist march from occurring on April 20, banning Itamar Ben-Gvir from visiting the Damascus Gate, fearing violence "which would endanger the lives of Israeli soldiers and police".[17] Israeli police stormed Al-Aqsa again on April 22, resulting in dozens of Palestinian injuries.[18] On April 29, Israeli police again entered the site, resulting in 42 Palestinian injuries.[19][20]
On 30 April, Muslim worshipers confronted rioters in al-Aqsa and said "You are harming us". As in previous days, masked rioters reached the steps of the Temple Mount, waved Hamas flags and sang in praise. Hundreds of worshipers stopped the police forces who were on their way to disperse the riots, and confronted themselves: "You are destroying the prayer, your actions will ignite the area".[21]
West Bank
As a result of the aforementioned clashes at Jenin, tensions in the West Bank were high prior to the disturbances at Al-Aqsa.[22] Israeli forces shot a 14 year old teenager for throwing a Molotov Cocktail at Israeli forces on April 14.[23] Israeli forces raided the village of Yaabad, the hometown of the perpetrator of the 2022 Tel Aviv shooting. Fighting broke out on 20 April between IDF personnel and Palestinians, resulting in two arrests.[24]
Israel
On 18 April, Palestinian Islamic Jihad fired a rocket into Israel in response to the Israeli raid on Al-Aqsa. The Rocket was reportedly intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.[25] On 22 April Hamas and Islamic Jihad launched 3 more rockets into Israel in retaliation for the renewed raid on Al-Aqsa, with one rocket falling short and causing an injury and the rest landing in open fields.[26]
International reactions
United Nations - The UN Security Council held an emergency consultation on the violence in Jerusalem.[31] It refrained from placing blame on any opposing side.
United Arab Emirates - The UAE summoned the Israeli envoy over attacks on civilians and intruding on holy spaces.[32]
Arab League - The Arab League stressed the need to unify, coordinate, and step up Arab efforts to halt escalations in Jerusalem, again urging Israel to respect the historical and legal status quo in Al-Aqsa Mosque and safeguard the rights of Muslim worshippers.[33]
European Union - The European Union called on both sides to "deescalate" and maintain the status quo, as well as act against "extremists".[34]
United States - The US State Department called on both sides to "exercise restraint, avoid provocative actions and rhetoric, and preserve the historic status quo on the Temple Mount".[35]
